This temple stands on the Takht-e-Suleiman hill. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. The structure displays simple Kashmiri architecture. Visitors must climb steps to reach the top. From there, you can see the Dal Lake and the mountains.
The Shankaracharya Temple is very old. King Gopaditya built it first, around 371 BC. A famous saint named Adi Shankaracharya visited it later. He stayed there and gave the temple its name. This visit happened in the 9th century AD. So the temple is over 2000 years old.
The temple is in the Zabarwan mountain range. It overlooks the city of Srinagar. The Dal Lake lies near the temple. The temple is about 5 kilometres away from Dal Lake.
Travellers can travel to Srinagar by air or road. The airport in Srinagar is the nearest one. From the city, you can take a taxi or a car. The vehicle will go up to a certain point. Then you must climb around 240 steps to reach the temple. The distance from the airport to the Dal Lake area is about 16 kilometres.
