History

The Pallava king Tondaiman built the temple. Queen Samavai donated land and jewels in 966 CE. The Chola and Vijayanagara rulers added gold and diamonds. Emperor Krishnadevaraya gifted gold for the roof in 1517. Saint Ramanujacharya visited three times. He set the temple rituals. The British gave temple control to Hathiramji Mutt in 1843. The government formed Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams in 1933. TTD manages the temple today.

Mythology Legends

Lord Vishnu left Vaikuntha. He came to Earth as Srinivasa. Goddess Lakshmi left him. She went to Kolhapur. Srinivasa meditated on the seven hills. A Chola king s cow gave him milk daily. A cowherd hit the cow. Srinivasa took the injury. He cursed the king. The king took birth as Akasharaja. Srinivasa married his daughter Padmavati. He returned to Tirumala. He stays here for all in Kali Yuga.

Festivals Rituals

TTD conducts daily rituals per Vaikanasa Agama. Priests chant Vedas and recite Divya Prabandham. Ramanujacharya started this system.
