The caves are carved directly into the rock of the hill. Historians believe artisans built these temples between the 7th and 9th centuries. The temples mainly honor Lord Shiva and show many scenes from Hindu mythology.
One of the most important sculptures in the caves is the Trimurti of Shiva. This large stone sculpture stands about 20 feet tall. It shows three faces of Lord Shiva, which represent creation, protection, and destruction.
Because of its historical and cultural value, UNESCO declared the Elephanta Caves a World Heritage Site in 1987. Today, the island is a popular tourist destination near Mumbai.
