Durga Puja is a major festival in India. People celebrate it mostly in West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, and Bihar. History of Durga Puja in Bengal
Chandimangal first mentioned Durga Puja. 17th-century zamindars started grand celebrations. Sabarna Roy Chowdhury held the first public puja. Barowari puja began in 1830. This became today's community pujas.
Durga Puja 2026 runs from September 18-22, beginning with Mahalaya on September 10. Key days include Shashthi (18th), Saptami (19th), Ashtami (20th), Navami (21st), and Dashami (22nd). The festival occurs in the month of Ashwin and celebrates Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura.

দুর্গাপূজার প্রথম উল্লেখ পাওয়া যায় ১৫শ শতকের চণ্ডীমঙ্গল কাব্যে। ১৭শ শতকে রাজশাহী ও নদিয়ার জমিদাররা বড় আয়োজনে পূজা শুরু করেন। ১৭৫৭ সালে কলকাতার সাবর্ণ রায়চৌধুরী পরিবার প্রথম সর্বজনীন পূজার আয়োজন করে, ১৮৩০ সালে বাগবাজার ও ভবানীপুরে বারোয়ারি পূজা শুরু হয়। এই বারোয়ারি পূজাই আজকের সর্বজনীন পূজার আদি রূপ। ধীরে ধীরে পূজা বাংলার প্রধান উৎসবে পরিণত হয়। এখন এটি বাঙালির সবচেয়ে বড় ধর্মীয় ও সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান।
